This North York home has two covered outdoor spaces: a backyard deck under a cedar-lined roof and a front porch facing the street. Both are open on the sides, which lets in low sun, glare and wind and puts the seating areas on view from the yard and the street.
We measured every opening between the posts and made a custom outdoor roller shade for each one, so every shade fits its opening edge to edge. The fabric is a charcoal screen weave that blends in with the black aluminum railings and dark trim.
How it works
Each shade rolls up tight under the beam when it isn’t needed, so the deck and porch look the way they were built. Lowered, the screen fabric cuts glare and softens the view in, while the people inside can still see out: in the porch photo the street is clearly visible through the lowered shade.
Outdoor shades have to deal with wind, so the bottom bar of each shade clips to tie-down brackets on the posts. That keeps the fabric from swinging or flapping on gusty evenings.
Thinking about outdoor blinds?
Every outdoor space is a little different: the number and size of openings, which way they face, and how exposed they are to wind all change what works best. We bring fabric samples to your home, measure every opening and give you a written quote on the spot. See our outdoor blinds page for fabrics and motorized options, or read our guide to outdoor blinds for pergolas.
